Gallstones: What Is It?

Gallstones are tiny crystal-like structures formed in the gallbladder, found just below the liver. The gallbladder is the storage space for bile juice, a digestion-aiding liquid secreted by the liver. Many factors lead to gallstones. These include excess cholesterol or bilirubin in the bile juice secreted in the gallbladder. When these gallstones block the flow of bile juice, it results in extreme pain. Gallstones are treated with gallstone surgery.

Symptoms of Gallstones

The gallstones symptoms may not be visible or noticeable at first. But if a gallstone blocks the bile duct, it can result in the following signs and symptoms: Pain in the upper right side of the abdomen Severe pain in the center of the abdomen, just below the breastbone Pain between the shoulder blades Pain in the right shoulder Nausea or vomiting The gallstones pain lasts several minutes to a few hours.

How to Diagnose Gallstones?

Gallstones can be diagnosed by certain specific tests and procedures. The two most common ones are: Abdominal ultrasound: This is the most commonly used test to diagnose gallstones. A transducer device is moved back and forth across the stomach area. The signals received in a computer are created into images of the gallstones. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): In this procedure, an endoscope is inserted into the digestive tract from the mouth. A transducer in the tube produces sound waves, which are then converted into images of the condition. In addition to these, there are also certain other imaging tests which include Oral Cholecystography, Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid (HIDA) scan, Computerized Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Cholangio Pancreatography (MRCP), and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP). Sometimes, blood tests are also done to identify infection,gallstone jaundice, gallstone pancreatitis, or other complications caused by gallstones.

What Is the Treatment for Gallstones?

Gallbladder removal or cholecystectomy: Your doctor may recommend cholecystectomy as the gallstones keep recurring. Removal of the gallbladder does not affect survival. One can live without a gallbladder. The liver secretes the bile directly into the small intestine instead of storing it in the gallbladder. Medications to dissolve the gallstone: Certain medications dissolve the gallstones. However, the dissolution may take months or years. The gallstone may recur after the treatment is stopped.

When Will The Doctor Suggest Surgery?

The doctor will recommend gallstone surgery when the gallbladder is severely swollen or infected. Two types of surgeries are commonly performed. These are laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) and open surgery (open cholecystectomy).
