Knee replacement surgery is generally recommended: - If the patient has severe pain, swelling, and stiffness in the knee joint with reduced mobility - If the knee pain interferes with the patient’s quality of life and sleep - If the pain makes it difficult or impossible to do everyday tasks - If the patient is unable to have a normal social life
Eligibility for knee surgery depends on the severity of knee pain, limited mobility, and response to conservative treatments like medication and physical therapy. Also, it is recommended if you have arthritis, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, posttraumatic arthritis, or fractures.
If you face any of the above issues, your doctor may first assess if knee replacement is necessary. You may be asked to get an X-ray scan done. This will help your doctor to check the mobility, stability, and strength of your knees. It will also highlight the extent of knee damage.
Knee replacement surgery is contraindicated in patients with: - Active local or widespread infection - Medical conditions that put the patient at an increased risk for complications or death during or after the surgery - Severe disease affecting peripheral blood vessels or nerves
The knee replacement surgery is done in 2 ways, i.e. total knee replacement and partial knee replacement surgery. - In total knee replacement surgery, all the affected or damaged knee joint is replaced with an artificial joint. - In partial knee replacement surgery, only a part of the affected knee joint is removed surgically. It is replaced with an artificial joint that is made of plastic or metal. Many hospitals in India also perform Robotic Knee Replacement Surgery that lessens stress, trauma, and pain to the patients.
Certain medications and dietary supplements might be stopped before the surgery. You might also be instructed not to eat any solid food after midnight on the day of your surgery.
Prior to the knee operation, your doctor may give you a spinal block or general anesthesia. The spinal block will numb the lower part of your body, whereas the general anesthetic will put you in a sleep state. Your doctor may inject numbing medicine around the knee joint so that you do not feel the pain after your surgery. The procedure is usually completed within 2 hours. To perform the surgery, the surgeon: - Makes a cut over the knee. - Removes diseased and affected bone and cartilage, leaving healthy bone intact. - Place the implants into the thigh bone, shinbone, and kneecap.
After the surgery, you might need crutches or a walker. It will help if you arrange for them prior to the surgery. Make arrangements for a ride back home from the hospital. Also, arrange for someone who can help you with the everyday tasks, including cooking, bathing, doing laundry, etc. The risk of blood clots generally increases after the surgery. To prevent this complication, you may need to: - Move early - Apply pressure - Take blood thinners Your doctor may ask you to do frequent breathing exercises. You may also be asked to increase your level of activity gradually. You can learn the exercises from your physical therapist. After leaving the hospital, you may have to continue the physical therapy at home or at the hospital.
Knee replacement surgery is one of the most effective and safest procedures. It helps people improve their mobility and relieves long-term pain. The surgery improves the patient’s quality of life.
Around 90-95% of knee replacement surgery in India is successful. It is considered one of the safest and most successful surgeries around the world, too.
If the knee replacement fails, your doctor may recommend that you undergo another surgery, i.e. a revision total knee replacement. Here, your doctor removes some or all of the parts of the implant and replaces them with new ones.
Knee joint replacement surgery is generally not the first option to treat severe knee pain. Various alternative therapies are recommended and tried, which may even relieve some. These include the following: - Weight loss and exercise - Physical therapy - Hyaluronic acid injections - Medication and steroid shots - Acupuncture - Prolotherapy - Arthroscopic surgery - Knee osteotomy - Walking aids and supports

Knee joint replacement surgery is very safe. With the advanced surgical techniques, especially with the use of robots, the surgeries are done in the most precise way. This improves the safety and accuracy of the procedure.
Surgery is never the first option. First, your doctor may recommend non-surgical therapy options. However, if you do not benefit from these, your doctor may discuss the advantages of surgery with you. The decision to consider surgery will depend on the severity of your condition.
The artificial knee is made of metal or metal-grade plastic. There are 2 ways to attach the implants to the bone. One is the cement-based technique, where cement is used to fix the implant in place. The other is non-cement-based, where the knee implant has a porous coating. This allows the bone to grow onto it and fixes it in position.
