Gallstones: What Is It?

Tinyl crystal-like objects that form in the gallbladder are called gallstones. The gallbladder is located under the liver in our digestive system.

Gallstones : Causes

The gallbladder stores the bile secreted by the liver. These liquids aid in the breakdown of fats and food. Normally, the bile duct allows the bile juice to enter the small intestine, where it digests the meal. Sometimes, the bile duct is blocked by a gallstone, preventing bile flow into the colon. Having high cholesterol or bilirubin in the stored bile in the gallbladder often leads to the formation of gallstones.

Symptoms of Gallstones

Initial symptoms of gallstones may not be obvious. They occur when the case is a bit serious, like, when a gallstone blocks the bile duct, it can result in the following gallbladder stone symptoms: - Sudden and extreme pain in the upper right side of the abdomen - Severe pain in the center of the abdomen, under the breastbone - Pain between the shoulder blades - Pain in the right shoulder - Nausea or vomiting Gallstones pain can last from a few minutes to a few hours.

How to Diagnose Gallstones?

The gallstones are diagnosed with the help of specific tests and procedures. Gallstone specialists use two tests commonly, which are: Abdominal ultrasound: In abdominal ultrasound, a transducer scans the stomach area. The transducer is probed back and forth to create signals. These signals are transformed into gallstone pictures by the computer. It is the most frequently used imaging test to diagnose gallstones. Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS): A small, flexible tube called an endoscope is passed into the digestive tract through the mouth. A transducer present in the tube produces sound waves. These are converted into images. Gallstones are also detected using imaging tests such as an - Oral Cholecystography - Magnetic Resonance Cholangio Pancreatography (MRCP) - Computerized Tomography (CT) - Hepatobiliary Iminodiacetic Acid (HIDA) scan - Gallstones detected using Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangio Pancreatography (ERCP) can also be removed during the assessment. Blood tests: A few blood tests can also be done to detect the complications of gallstones, including infection, gallstone pancreatitis, jaundice, etc.

What Is the Treatment for Gallstones?

Gallbladder Removal (Cholecystectomy): If gallstones become recurrent or problematic, a cholecystectomy might be advised by your physician. The removal of the gallbladder does not impact overall survival, as one can lead a healthy life without it. Instead, bile produced by the liver flows directly into the small intestine, bypassing the gallbladder. Medications for Gallstone Dissolution: Some specific medications can aid in dissolving gallstones. However, this dissolution process can extend over several months or even years. It's important to note that there's a possibility of gallstone recurrence once the treatment is discontinued.

When Will The Doctor Suggest Surgery?

A gallstone or gallbladder surgery may be recommended when the gallbladder is severely swollen or infected. Two types of surgeries are commonly performed i.e. a laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic cholecystectomy) or an open surgery (open cholecystectomy).
